CarbonCure reaches CO₂ savings milestone
CarbonCure Technologies, a company focused on carbon utilisation in the concrete industry, has announced it has saved more than 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ across 7.5 million truckloads of concrete.
“This milestone highlights the strong leadership of CarbonCure’s concrete producer partners,” said Rob Niven, founder and CEO of CarbonCure. “Together, we’re proving that reducing concrete’s carbon footprint is achievable today and at scale.”
CarbonCure’s technology works by injecting captured CO₂ into fresh concrete. The CO₂ mineralises and becomes permanently stored, allowing producers to reduce cement usage without affecting the concrete’s strength. This helps cut emissions and costs, creating both environmental and economic benefits.
CarbonCure has installed systems in over 25 countries, providing low-carbon concrete for sustainable construction projects. The technology not only reduces emissions but also enables producers to generate carbon credits, providing additional financial benefits.
“Surpassing 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ savings demonstrates the progress we’ve made in tackling embodied carbon in construction,” said CarbonCure board chair Lisa Bate. “The demand for low-carbon building materials is growing, and CarbonCure is helping to meet that demand.”
Significant environmental impact
The 500,000-tonne CO₂ saving is equivalent to the carbon absorbed annually by 583,000 acres of forest, or the emissions from 119,000 petrol-powered cars driven for a year.
“This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the commitment of our innovative concrete industry partners,” said Niven. “The shared carbon credit revenue model incentivises further decarbonisation, accelerating the transition to low-carbon concrete.”
CarbonCure’s technology is used by concrete producers around the world, including Kilsaran in Ireland, Pan-United Corporation in Singapore, and Thomas Concrete in the US, with over 46 million cubic metres of concrete supplied to green construction projects.
