Doka commits to Science Based Targets initiative

Global formwork and scaffolding manufacturer Doka has become the first in its industry to commit to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The move is part of the company’s long-term goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040, aligning its sustainability strategy with the Paris Agreement.

The construction sector generates about 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it central to efforts to combat climate change.

Doka’s CEO, Robert Hauser, views the commitment as both necessary and strategic: “The transition to net zero is a complex challenge that requires both ambition and resilience. By committing to the SBTi, we are demonstrating that sustainability is not just a buzzword for us – it’s serious business.”

The company has pledged to cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 42% by 2030, with the same reduction target applied to Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions from its supply chain.

Doka is already implementing measures to achieve these reductions. Its Austrian headquarters now operates on 100% renewable electricity, supported by expanded photovoltaic systems. The company’s rental model contributes to the circular economy by refurbishing formwork to minimise waste and extend product life.

“We are constantly working with our customers and suppliers to develop safer, more efficient, and climate-friendly solutions. Our commitment to SBTi solidifies our dedication to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, not just within Doka but across our entire supply chain,” said Hauser.

Doka is also playing a role in industry innovation, helping to establish standards for calculating the carbon footprint of formwork and scaffolding. These initiatives, said the company, provide transparency and enable customers to make more sustainable choices.

What is the Science Based Targets initiative?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) serves as a benchmark for ambitious climate action in the private sector. The initiative provides a clearly defined pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Targets are considered ‘science-based’ if they are in line with the latest climate science in order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

SBTi is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
