Construction of HS2’s Stoneleigh Road bridge near Kenilworth is moving forward, with major concrete works completed and final touches underway.

The bridge, which spans 33 m and is 42 m wide, will carry a dual carriageway and provide green corridors to help wildlife cross the railway safely. It is one of 16 similar structures designed to blend into the surrounding landscape.

Piling work began in October 2023, with a team of 50 workers involved at peak construction. A significant milestone was reached in late 2024 with the pouring of 1,900 cubic metres of concrete to form the deck slab. Engineers have since installed 32 pre-cast parapets, each weighing nine tonnes.

With the main structure finished, work will now focus on realigning Stoneleigh Road over the bridge and building a new roundabout connecting to Stoneleigh Business Park. Nine-metre-wide strips of hedgerows and vegetation will be planted on either side of the road to create safe habitats for birds, small animals and insects.

HS2’s senior project manager, Vicki Lee, said: “A big thank you to everyone involved both onsite and behind the scenes as we reach this exciting next phase of Stoneleigh Road green bridge’s development. What makes this bridge special is the green space on either side, allowing wildlife to cross safely.”

Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), HS2’s construction partner for the West Midlands, is delivering the project. George Shopland, project manager at BBV, said: “We’ve recently completed a huge single-span deck pour and are finishing installing the parapets. Completing this work means we’re entering the next exciting phase of construction.”

The road realignment and landscaping are expected to be completed by autumn 2025, allowing traffic to use the new route.

HS2 is constructing over 500 bridge structures along the route, including more than 50 major viaducts. When complete, the railway will connect London and the West Midlands with high-speed services, linking to the existing network further north.
