The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) has appointed Helen Roth as its new executive director, effective 1 January 2025.

Roth, a Norwegian transport infrastructure expert, will take on the role during a critical period of growth and demand in the global tunnelling industry.

Roth, who previously served as CEO of VIA, a Norwegian transport infrastructure network, brings a strong background in leading innovation and collaboration in transport solutions, particularly in tunnels and bridges. Under her leadership, VIA became a key player in Norway's infrastructure development.

"Helen’s leadership and experience are exactly what the ITA needs to navigate the evolving demands on our Association," said Arnold Dix, ITA president. "Her proven ability to drive innovation and foster collaboration makes her the ideal choice to lead our activities."

Roth will manage the ITA’s Executive Council and its Secretariat, ensuring smooth operations across the ITA’s 80 Member Nations, its committees, and partnerships with global organisations, including the United Nations.

Roth expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating: "The tunnelling industry is crucial in addressing some of the world’s major infrastructure challenges. I’m honoured to lead an organisation with such an influential role in shaping a sustainable future."

The ITA, founded in 1974, supports efforts to develop sustainable infrastructure through underground solutions, bringing together industry leaders and engineers to address the challenges of urbanisation, climate change, and global infrastructure needs.
