Safe Ladder Use: Guidance for construction sites

Falls from height remain the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the UK, with improper ladder use being a key factor. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is reminding businesses that while ladders and stepladders can be useful for short, low-risk tasks, they should not always be the first option.

To help employers and workers use ladders safely, HSE has updated its guidance, which includes advice on competency requirements, using telescopic ladders correctly, and securing ladders to prevent accidents. There are also practical tips for combination and multi-purpose ladders.

A spokesperson for HSE said, "Ladders can be a practical solution, but they must be used properly. Our guidance aims to help workers and employers make informed decisions about ladder safety."

HSE has worked with the Ladder Association to produce the document Safe Use of Ladders and Stepladders, which is available for download. More information can be found on HSE’s working at height website.
