Ready-mixed concrete supplier Ashcourt Concrete has successfully completed a crucial 1,200m³ concrete pour for the A63 underpass project in Hull, playing a key role in the £355 million A63 Castle Street scheme. The work, part of a wider effort to improve traffic flow and safety along a vital route in Hull, was carried out over a 40-hour period during weekend road closures to minimise disruption.

The concrete pour was divided into four slabs, completed in continuous phases over the weekend, using Ashcourt's C40/50 mix. Concrete was supplied at a rate of 30m³ per hour from two Liebherr plants, located in Hull and Melton. A fleet of 10 to 16 concrete mixers worked throughout the day and night to meet the pour’s demands, ensuring a consistent supply of concrete to the two pumps on site.

“We’re proud to be part of this significant project alongside Balfour Beatty,” said a spokesperson for Ashcourt Concrete. “The success of this pour relied on close coordination across various divisions of the Ashcourt Group. Ashcourt Concrete worked alongside Ashcourt Aggregates, who supplied the sand and granite, and Ashcourt Fuels, who ensured a steady fuel supply, allowing us to deliver everything efficiently and on time.”

The A63 underpass is a key element of the £355 million A63 Castle Street scheme, which is aimed at improving access between Hull’s city centre, retail areas, and docks. The A63 underpass will see a 400-metre stretch of the A63 lowered to create a split-level junction, enhancing east-west traffic flow while improving safety and reducing congestion.

Construction began in August 2021, and the project is expected to be completed by spring 2026. The road closures, including those in March 2025 for this concrete pour, are necessary to allow for large-scale works, including the pouring of 1,200m³ of concrete over the course of the weekend.

Ashcourt Concrete’s role in the A63 underpass project is a testament to the company's expertise and reliability in supporting critical infrastructure developments across the UK. The partnership with Tier 1 contractor Balfour Beatty further reinforces Ashcourt's position as a trusted supplier of ready-mix concrete for large-scale projects.
