BAA calls for government action on quarrying
The British Aggregates Association (BAA) has called on the UK government to improve communication and coordination between statutory bodies to support the quarrying sector’s growth in 2025 and beyond. The BAA urges action to streamline regulatory processes and facilitate stronger collaboration between agencies, such as HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the Environment Agency, and local authorities.
The quarrying sector plays a crucial role in providing essential materials for housing, roads, and infrastructure projects. However, the BAA highlights that the sector is hindered by unnecessary regulatory barriers and fragmented communication among different agencies, which slows progress and limits the industry’s ability to contribute fully to economic growth.
“We are ready to rise to the challenge of supporting the government’s housing and infrastructure goals,” said mike phillips, CEO of the BAA. “But success will depend on clear regulatory frameworks, streamlined permitting, and improved inter-agency collaboration. The government must act swiftly to remove barriers and foster an environment conducive to sustainable growth.”
The BAA stresses the importance of clear and effective permitting processes to ensure long-term stability and resource security in the quarrying sector. This includes a comprehensive understanding of permitted reserves and land banks, which would provide businesses with the confidence to invest and expand.
The government has set a target of building 320,000 new homes annually, which requires a steady supply of materials from the quarrying industry. With the proper support and clearer regulatory frameworks, the BAA believes the sector can play a significant role in meeting these ambitious construction goals.
“Better communication and reduced operational friction will help the quarrying sector unlock its full potential,” Phillips added. “This will not only contribute to the construction of vital infrastructure but also strengthen the broader UK economy.”
The BAA urges the government to prioritise better communication and collaboration in 2025, ensuring the quarrying and construction sectors can maximise their contribution to the UK’s economic and sustainability goals.
