GD Harries, one of Wales’ largest suppliers of aggregates, asphalt and ready-mix concrete, has introduced Podfather logistics software to improve delivery efficiency and customer service. The move has eliminated paper from the delivery process, reducing costs and improving communication between drivers, back-office staff and customers.

The Podfather system, which integrates with GD Harries’ existing ERP software, includes electronic proof of delivery (ePOD) features. Drivers now use the Podfather app to access their schedules and delivery notes, navigate routes, and record delivery details digitally. This information — including time-stamped photos and customer signatures — is instantly shared with the back office and customers, improving visibility and response times.

Aled Hughes, IT systems manager at GD Harries, said the system has made a big difference: “Before we adopted Podfather we were literally drowning in paper. This had to be produced, in duplicate if not triplicate, and handed out to drivers at the start of each shift. The paperwork required numerous action points — when the truck was loaded, when the delivery was made, and when the driver returned to base — each of which needed manual intervention. It was also tricky to access in the case of a customer query.”

GD Harries reviewed several options before selecting Podfather due to its market experience and range of features. Hughes explained: “Podfather offered everything we needed and, due to experience with other customers in the same sector as us, were able to understand our initial requirements and future needs. This has made the implementation and adoption process much easier than if we had selected a partner with no knowledge of heavy haulage.”

Since introducing Podfather, GD Harries has seen improvements in delivery tracking and customer service. Drivers receive real-time updates and can record delivery details quickly and accurately. Customers benefit from faster responses to queries and better access to delivery records.

GD Harries also uses Podfather’s vehicle check feature. Drivers complete guided walkarounds to identify potential issues before they become serious problems. If a breakdown occurs, drivers can upload photos to help speed up recovery and repairs.

GD Harries, founded in 1977 as a small haulage and plant hire operator, now owns seven quarries, three asphalt plants and eight concrete plants across West Wales. It also operates its own sea transportation port at Pembroke Dock and supplies materials and construction solutions for third-party projects and its own highway maintenance and civil engineering work.

The company expects further improvements as Podfather’s planning and route optimisation features help streamline operations.
