LANXESS unveils low-carbon yellow pigment for concrete

A close up of two hands holding one of three vials with a variety of orange powder LANXESS’s new iron oxide yellow pigment is suitable for colouring concrete and other building materials.

Speciality chemicals company LANXESS has introduced a new iron oxide yellow pigment with a lower carbon footprint, designed for use in concrete, coatings, and other construction materials.

The pigment, part of the company’s Scopeblue range, is produced using more sustainable raw materials, reducing its product carbon footprint (PCF) by around 35% compared to standard Bayferrox grades.

The new pigment range includes Bayferrox 3910, 3910 LV, and 3920, which can be used in precast concrete, mortar, and decorative concrete applications. These pigments provide long-lasting colour while maintaining the same chemical composition, durability, and UV resistance as conventional products.

Daniela Schmitt, head of global marketing at LANXESS’ inorganic pigments unit, said: “With the launch of our new low-emission yellow pigment, we aim to help customers reduce the carbon footprint of their own products.”

The PCF reduction is verified by TÜV Rheinland, and the raw materials used meet the ISCC Plus (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) standard under the mass balance method. This ensures that the pigments contribute to more sustainable supply chains in construction.

The Scopeblue pigments work exactly like traditional iron oxide pigments, meaning they can be easily integrated into existing concrete mixes and coatings. They provide the same colour strength and durability, making them suitable for high-end concrete finishes, coloured facades, and decorative architectural elements.
