NPC upgrades MultiBar pile cropper following site feedback

National Pile Cropper (NPC) has released an upgraded version of its popular MultiBar cropper, incorporating changes driven by customer feedback and insights from technicians working on site. The revised design prioritises safety, performance and ease of use, while maintaining the tool’s straightforward functionality.

The MultiBar cropper is used to remove precast concrete piles with four or more reinforcement bars (rebar), reducing the pile in 250 mm increments. The upgraded models are available in three sizes – small, standard and large – each suitable for use with a 6-tonne excavator. The tool is designed to be manoeuvrable while retaining the strength needed to tackle tough precast piles.

“Although the first multi bar croppers were the original precast pile cropper, we’ve continually refined and developed the MultiBar,” said NPC director Lee Aston. “This latest version is the result of close collaboration with some of the biggest civil engineering companies, as well as direct feedback from our technicians working in the field.”

Key updates include a reduced footprint and operating weight, making the cropper easier to handle around closely spaced piles. The redesigned frame also provides better protection for hydraulic cylinders and hoses, reducing the risk of damage during operation. NPC has also improved maintenance access, making the tool easier to repair.

Aston said the MultiBar now benefits from in-house manufactured chisels, designed to break concrete effectively while leaving a clean finish. “The new chisels break up the pile into manageable pieces, and the cropped section can be lifted off easily for safe removal and recycling,” he added.

The updated models are:

  • MultiBar Small: for pile sizes 200–300 mm; 450 kg
  • MultiBar Standard: for pile sizes 200–300 mm; 550 kg
  • MultiBar Large: for pile sizes 300–350 mm; 600 kg

Each model maintains a consistent cutting method, with the best results achieved when the final cut is at least 250 mm deep. The new design retains the ability to deliver consistent results with minimal tidying up required.

Field testing of the redesigned MultiBar has already been completed, with the tool now available for hire or purchase across the UK. NPC plans to introduce the upgraded cropper to international markets in the coming months and intends to roll out similar updates across its full product range within the next 18 months.
