Professor Sir Ian Chapman has been appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). He will take over from Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser when her five-year term ends in June 2025.

Sir Ian is currently CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and has served on the UKRI board. He is also a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society.

Science minister Lord Vallance welcomed the appointment, saying, “Sir Ian’s leadership experience, scientific expertise and academic achievements make him an exceptionally strong candidate to lead UKRI in pursuing ambitious, curiosity-driven research.”

Sir Andrew Mackenzie, UKRI’s chairman, said the organisation plays a key role in driving UK economic growth. “Ian has the skills, experience, leadership and commitment to unlock this opportunity to improve the lives and livelihoods of everyone,” he said.

Sir Ian said he is looking forward to the role. “UKRI should be central to the future of the people in this country and beyond. I am excited to be joining an excellent team focused on improving the lives and livelihoods of UK citizens.”

Dame Ottoline, who has led UKRI since 2020, praised Sir Ian’s appointment and said she was proud of the organisation’s progress under her leadership.

Transition plans will be finalised in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth handover before Sir Ian starts in summer 2025.
