Precision cutting used to remove Essex cottage concrete slab
Controlled demolition and concrete cutting specialist Castle & Pryor has successfully removed a reinforced concrete slab from a private residence in Essex as part of underpinning and strengthening work, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding structures.
The 350mm-deep slab was taken out using precision cutting and drilling techniques to prevent vibration and potential damage, with Castle & Pryor carrying out the work over two days.
To avoid overcutting during sawing, which can create weak points in slabs and walls and may lead to future failures or cracking, Castle & Pryor drilled 178 127mm diameter holes in a stitch-drilled pattern at the ends and corners of the cuts. The team used a Husqvarna DM340 drill rig and motor to complete this phase of the work.

"Minimising vibration was essential to protect the integrity of the surrounding structure," said a Castle & Pryor spokesperson. "We used controlled cutting methods to ensure precise removal."
Following the drilling, the slab was cut into 40 sections, each weighing approximately 50kg. The cuts, made using a Tyrolit WSE1217 track saw, formed a grid pattern across the slab. In total, 106 metres of cuts were made at a depth of 350mm.
Once cutting was complete, the sections were removed, allowing the main contractor to proceed with foundation underpinning and strengthening works.
