Advanced Carbons Council aims to reduce CO₂

Global Trade Association launched for advanced carbon materials

The Advanced Carbons Council (ACC), a global trade association, has been launched to support the production and use of engineered advanced carbons. These materials include graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon fibre, and recycled carbon forms, which have applications in sectors like construction, energy, and transport.

The ACC aims to connect producers, users, and developers of advanced carbons to foster innovation and collaboration. Executive director Terrance Barkan explained, “It is time that we intelligently apply different advanced forms of carbon, working together, to create a truly sustainable economy.”

The ACC highlights that advanced carbons are critical to achieving global net zero targets by reducing CO₂ emissions and creating sustainable products. These materials are used in technologies to enhance durability, reduce energy use, and develop greener construction materials. The markets for advanced carbons represent over $500 billion (£400 billion) in turnover annually.

Advanced carbons like carbon nanotubes and graphene are already making concrete more durable and sustainable. For example, their addition can reduce the need for cement, one of the most carbon-intensive components of concrete, while improving its strength and longevity.

The ACC is an initiative by the team behind The Graphene Council, which has developed a global community of over 36,000 materials professionals over the last 11 years. Like its predecessor, the ACC will focus on standards, safety, sustainability, testing, and connecting users with supply chain partners.

“Whether it is converting reclaimed carbons into high-value new materials or extending the life of existing ones, advanced carbons represent a significant opportunity to reduce emissions while improving product performance,” said Barkan.

The ACC has a busy schedule in 2025, with a presence at JEC World in Paris from 4–6 March and a partnership with the Advanced Materials Show in Birmingham in July. These events will provide opportunities for stakeholders to discuss innovations and opportunities in the advanced carbons sector.

The ACC operates globally, with its main focus on North America, Europe, and Asia. Its work is expected to influence industries worldwide, including construction, where advanced carbons are already transforming concrete production.
