Art of Building photography competition launches

Alain Schroeder earned the Judges' Choice Award in 2023 for his photo Bricks, which was taken in Bangladesh.

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has launched its 2024 Art of Building photography competition, an opportunity for both amateur and professional photographers to capture the artistry of architecture around the world.

The contest, which is free to enter, opened on 11 October and encourages submissions that celebrate the aesthetic and cultural significance of the built environment.

Saul Townsend, CIOB’s head of communications, said: “Buildings are much more than just structures. They reflect our culture and shape the landscapes of our cities and communities.” He added that the competition allows photographers to showcase their unique perspectives, whether they’re seasoned professionals or emerging talent.

Once the submission period closes on 25 November, a panel of judges will review the entries and create a shortlist. From there, the public will vote for a Public Choice winner, while the judges will select the Judges’ Choice. Each winner will receive a £1,500 cash prize, and their work will be displayed at construction sites worldwide, broadening the visibility of their artistry.

Last year’s winners included Azim Khan Ronnie from Bangladesh, who won the Public Choice award for his image of Bangladesh’s National Mosque, and Alain Schroeder from Belgium, who earned the Judges' Choice for his photo Bricks, also taken in Bangladesh.

Open to participants over 18, the CIOB Art of Building competition continues to attract high-calibre work. Townsend noted that the quality of submissions improves yearly, presenting a “welcome challenge” to the judging panel. This year’s winners will be announced on 22 January 2025.
