Heidelberg Materials has signed an agreement to sell its majority stake in Cimenterie de Lukala, a cement manufacturer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The deal, which involves a 91% stake in the company, includes an integrated cement plant located in Lukala, just outside the DRC’s capital city, Kinshasa.

The sale to WIH Cement Developing Company Limited is expected to close in 2025, pending regulatory approval. Although the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, the move is part of Heidelberg Materials’ strategy to optimise its business portfolio.

In a statement, Heidelberg Materials said: “This divestment is part of our broader portfolio optimisation efforts, enabling us to concentrate on our strongest markets and future growth opportunities.

“The DRC remains an important market for Heidelberg Materials, but the sale represents a shift towards focusing on markets with stronger growth potential.”

Heidelberg Materials, a leading global manufacturer of building materials, operates in over 50 countries and employs around 51,000 people. The company is a key player in the cement, aggregates, and ready-mixed concrete markets, with strong positions in several regions. The divestment in the DRC reflects the company’s ongoing focus on strengthening its market presence in key areas, while streamlining operations in other regions.

Heidelberg Materials is committed to sustainability, working on solutions to reduce its carbon footprint and drive the transition towards a circular economy. The company continues to lead the industry in innovation and digitalisation, providing customers with sustainable building materials for the future.
