HSE refreshes respirator fit testing video

In partnership with the British Safety Industry Federation, HSE has published a refreshed version of a video on the Face Fit Respirator Demonstrator model (FFRED).

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in collaboration with the British Safety Industry Federation, has released an updated version of its Face Fit Respirator Demonstrator (FFRED) video. This resource aims to assist employers and workers in the concrete construction sector with the correct use of tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

The video highlights the necessity of proper fit testing for masks such as disposable filtering face pieces (FFPs) and reusable half-face masks. It demonstrates the importance of achieving a good seal to the face and illustrates potential issues arising from improper fit, including:

  • Incorrectly positioned straps or nose clips
  • Use of ear loop straps
  • Presence of facial hair
  • Damaged masks
  • Interference from other personal protective equipment (PPE)

HSE's guidance on fit testing basics for RPE has also been updated to include information on maintaining the hygiene of face fit testing kits. This includes cleaning procedures for respirators, hoods used in qualitative fit tests, and components of quantitative testing equipment.

Employers are reminded of their obligations under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) to ensure suitable RPE is provided and used when risks to health and safety cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Proper fit testing and maintenance of RPE are essential steps in protecting workers from hazardous substances commonly encountered in concrete construction, such as dust and silica particles.

The updated FFRED video and guidance materials are available on the HSE website.
