HSE urges safer lifting in construction
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is reminding construction companies to follow the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) to prevent accidents and ensure safe lifting of heavy materials and equipment.
LOLER sets out the legal requirements for using lifting equipment safely at work. This includes guidance on how to properly plan and supervise lifting operations, inspect and maintain lifting equipment, and ensure that equipment used to lift people is safe.
An HSE spokesperson said: "Following LOLER is essential for safe lifting operations, especially in high-risk sectors like construction. Proper planning and regular inspections help prevent accidents and ensure equipment is used correctly."
Concrete construction often involves lifting heavy materials, such as precast concrete panels, reinforcement bars and concrete blocks. Commonly used equipment like cranes, telehandlers and vacuum lifters must be thoroughly inspected and maintained under LOLER rules.
The HSE’s guidance covers key areas including:
- Safe lifting by machines, such as cranes and hoists
- Planning and organising lifting operations
- Thorough examination and maintenance of lifting equipment
- Safe use of vacuum and magnetic lifting devices
- Lifting people using platforms or other equipment
Construction companies are legally required to make sure that lifting operations are properly planned, supervised and carried out by qualified workers. Equipment must be strong enough for the task and regularly examined by a competent person.
Following LOLER helps reduce the risk of injury and ensures that lifting equipment is fit for purpose. The full guidance is available on the HSE website.
