Managing drug and alcohol misuse in your workplace

Worker under stress

The UK’s Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has issued new guidance on managing drug and alcohol misuse in the workplace.

Under UK law, all employers have a legal duty to protect employees’ health, safety, and welfare. HSE say using the guidance can help employers understand the signs of drug and alcohol misuse (or abuse) and help manage health and safety risk in the workplace.

To help employers, HSE’s website has step-by-step guidance to manage drug and alcohol misuse at work. This includes advice on how to develop a drugs and alcohol policy, and what employers can do to support employees.

There are seven sections to the guidance, including: Consult your employees, Look at safety-critical work, Develop a policy, Screening and testing for drugs and alcohol, Support employees with a drug or alcohol problem, and The law.

The full Managing drug and alcohol misuse at work guidance is available to view on the HSE’s website.
