Material Evolution has appointed Nigel Shewring as director of research and development, a new role aimed at advancing the company's ultra-low carbon cement technology.

Shewring has over 25 years of experience in international research and development, particularly in sustainable coatings. At Material Evolution, he will lead efforts to refine and expand its low-carbon cement formulations, working towards the company’s long-term goal of removing one billion tonnes of carbon from the concrete industry by 2040.

“I am thrilled to join Material Evolution at such an exciting time for the company and the industry,” said Shewring. “Cement production is one of the largest contributors to global CO₂ emissions, and I look forward to helping accelerate the pioneering R&D work already underway.”

Material Evolution began producing its ultra-low carbon MevoCem cement in 2024 at its Wrexham-based Mevo A1 Production Facility. The product reduces carbon emissions by 85% compared to traditional Ordinary Portland Cement. The company continues to develop new solutions to reduce the environmental impact of concrete.

David Hughes, chief scientific officer at Material Evolution, said: “Nigel’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Material Evolution. His extensive experience in materials science and leadership in R&D will be instrumental in advancing our sustainable cement technologies.”

As director of research and development, Shewring will oversee a team of scientists and engineers, foster external collaborations, and secure funding for future projects. His role is expected to strengthen the company’s position in sustainable construction materials and drive further innovation in low-carbon cement production.
