MPA publish region-by-region construction market guide

Data from Britain’s regional construction markets has been decoded in an insightful new report published by the Mineral Products Association (MPA).

The Mineral Products Association (MPA) has published a new report providing an in-depth look at construction markets and mineral product demand across Great Britain. The report, Regional Overview of Construction and Mineral Products Markets in Great Britain, offers a region-by-region analysis, covering nine English regions, Scotland, and Wales, with projections for market recovery from 2025 onwards.

The report brings together construction market data from various sources and highlights how demand for key materials such as aggregates, asphalt, concrete, and mortar is expected to evolve. It also incorporates MPA's own sales figures for heavy-side building materials, offering insight into underlying market trends, particularly where government data on the minerals industry is limited.

Luke George, MPA economist and author of the report, emphasised the importance of the publication for industry professionals. “This report is a one-stop region-by-region guide to our industry’s key markets. While there is plenty of construction data available, it can often be fragmented or hard to interpret. By consolidating key information and combining it with MPA’s reliable sales data, we’re offering a resource that helps decision-makers across the sector.”

The report identifies several key trends, including an anticipated recovery in demand for mineral products from 2025, driven by new housing developments and energy infrastructure projects, such as wind farms and nuclear power stations. Regions like the East of England, Scotland, and Wales are expected to benefit from these infrastructure investments.

Mark Russell, MPA executive director for planning and mineral resources, commented on the long-term importance of a steady supply of mineral products to support the UK construction industry. “If the government is to meet its targets for housing, infrastructure renewal, and energy transition, a consistent supply of mineral products is essential. Understanding regional demand trends will be key to ensuring that the necessary resources are in place.”

The report is designed to offer clear and actionable insights for businesses operating in the UK’s concrete and construction sectors, helping them navigate the complex and evolving market landscape.
