Amazon and Holcim invest in sustainable building startups

14Trees was established in 2016 as a joint venture between Holcim and BII to accelerate the provision of sustainable construction solutions in Africa.

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund has teamed up with Holcim to invest in two innovative startups, 14Trees and Paebbl, in a bid to promote more sustainable building practices.

The investment in 14Trees, a joint venture between Holcim and British International Investment (BII), aims to speed up the construction of large-scale, low-carbon buildings such as data centres. 14Trees specialises in 3D printing technology and has already built the first 3D-printed house in Africa, the world’s first 3D-printed schools, and one of the largest 3D-printed neighbourhoods globally.

At the same time, Paebbl, a startup focused on advanced mineralisation technology, will use the new funding to scale up its process for permanently storing CO₂ in concrete, effectively turning buildings into carbon sinks. This aligns with the industry’s push towards reducing carbon emissions in construction.

Paebbl converts CO₂ into a future-proof industrial raw material that turns the built environment into a permanent carbon store.

Commenting on the partnership, Nollaig Forrest, Holcim’s chief sustainability officer, said: “By investing with Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund into 14Trees and Paebbl, we can scale up these technologies to push the boundaries of sustainable building, from 3D printing to making concrete a carbon sink.”

Founded in 2016, 14Trees focuses on sustainable construction solutions in Africa, while Paebbl, established in 2021, aims to transform CO₂ into a sustainable industrial material. Both companies are now set to accelerate their innovative approaches with backing from Holcim and Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund.
