HS2’s Burton Green tunnel reaches halfway milestone

The construction of the HS2 Burton Green Tunnel in Warwickshire has reached the halfway point, marking significant progress on the 700-metre-long green tunnel designed to blend into the local landscape.

Delivered by Balfour Beatty VINCI and designed by Mott MacDonald SYSTRA Design Joint Venture, the project uses a ‘top down’ construction method. This involves building the roof and walls at ground level before excavating the interior to create the tunnel base. So far, the southern portal entrance and structural elements, including 1,300 concrete piles, have been completed, requiring 33,000 cubic metres of concrete.

An on-site team of 150 people is now focused on excavation, the installation of base and roof slabs, and internal structures. Completion is expected in autumn 2026. Excavated soil is being repurposed for landscaping, in line with HS2’s sustainability goals.

Speaking about the milestone, Doug Barnett, senior project manager for HS2, said: “Delivering a complex structure of this scale requires a huge amount of expertise and energy. We’re incredibly proud to have achieved the 50% completion mark here at Burton Green Tunnel.”

The tunnel will carry high-speed trains through Burton Green while a landscaped roof, featuring trees and plants, will provide a green space for the community.

Rupert Blake, project manager for Balfour Beatty VINCI, gives a guided tour of work to date on HS2's Burton Green tunnel.

Rupert Blake, project manager for Balfour Beatty VINCI, explains: “As an engineer, it’s hugely rewarding to lead the delivery of the 700-metre-long Burton Green Tunnel in Warwickshire. This is a fascinating structure both in terms of scale and complexity, but its green characteristics are what really sets this tunnel apart. When it’s complete, the roof will be finished with trees, plants and shrubs, so it blends in seamlessly with the existing landscape.”

Additionally, the realignment of the Kenilworth Greenway – a popular route for walkers, cyclists, and horse-riders – is integral to the project. A temporary route is in place during construction, with plans to restore the Greenway close to its original alignment upon project completion.

The Burton Green Tunnel is one of five green tunnels being constructed along the HS2 route, with others located in Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, and Hillingdon. The project is part of HS2’s broader efforts to create faster, more reliable transport while freeing up capacity on existing rail networks.
