DEK Group NE and EMPI Awards have introduced the Site Vehicle Competence Assessment (On-Road) (Tippers) Vocational Qualification (VQ).

Following the success of the SVCA (On-Road) (Mixers) VQ, this new qualification aims to enhance driver competence and safety in the minerals, extractives, and construction logistics sectors.

“We wanted to keep the momentum and focus on improving driver competence,” says DEK Group’s managing director, Mark Cowan from DEK Group. “Our collaboration with EMPI Awards shows our commitment to road safety by offering a superior alternative to standard driver CPC courses.”

The SVCA (On-Road) (Tippers) VQ assesses drivers' skills and safety awareness in real-world scenarios like quarries and construction sites. It identifies improvement areas, ensuring drivers are well-prepared for demanding tasks. The assessment is integrated into daily duties, minimising downtime.

The new qualification aligns with DVSA, HSE, and CLOCS standards, helping companies meet legal and industry requirements. The qualifications have been in development for five years, incorporating extensive feedback from drivers and industry stakeholders.

“Feedback from drivers was overwhelmingly positive, preferring this hands-on approach over traditional classroom settings,” said Cowan.

Valid for three years, the qualification comes with an EMPI Awards Driver Skills Card as proof of competence. Companies can deliver the SVCA VQs in-house, offering a cost-effective training solution tailored to their needs.

There is also the potential for experienced drivers to become trainers and assessors, enhancing the industry's training capabilities.

Lisa Fleming and the Logico team have ensured that the SVCA VQs meet high regulatory standards, providing a robust and credible process. The qualification is available through Logico Assessment Hubs for £85.

Bay-Lynx Manufacturing UK is the first manufacturer to offer the SVCA (On-Road) (Mixers) as standard, reinforcing the industry's commitment to safety and competence.
