Thames Water confirms £400m framework to deliver infrastructure upgrades

Thames Water has finalised a £400 million framework to support a significant expansion of its infrastructure projects during the next asset management period (AMP8), from 2025 to 2030.

The company expects its capital programme to be up to three times larger than its current level, focusing on modernising ageing infrastructure and addressing the impacts of climate change. Key projects include upgrades to water treatment works, sewage treatment works, and the wider water and sewer network.

Agreements have been awarded to ten suppliers under the framework. These include:

  • AECOM: A global infrastructure consulting firm known for its expertise in design and engineering solutions.
  • Arcadis: Specialists in sustainability and resilience within built environments.
  • AtkinsRéalis: Providers of technical and management support for large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Binnies: A company with expertise in water and environmental management.
  • Costain: Known for its role in delivering major UK infrastructure projects.
  • CPC Project Services: Focused on project and programme management.
  • Jacobs: An international consultancy specialising in technical and scientific innovation.
  • Mott MacDonald: A multidisciplinary consultancy with a strong focus on sustainable development.
  • Stantec: Experts in community development and infrastructure design.
  • Turner & Townsend: Renowned for programme management and cost consultancy.

Preetinder Dhanoa, capital procurement business partner at Thames Water, says the agreements aim to reduce supplier capacity risks and foster collaboration: “This agreement will introduce a number of improvements to our previous arrangements, including driving value through innovation and partnership working.”

Thames Water says the framework builds on customer feedback to help deliver a “reliable, secure, and affordable service” while reducing its environmental impact. If approved, its AMP8 plan will increase investment in infrastructure to ensure greater resilience.

The framework also aims to improve knowledge-sharing between suppliers and implement lessons learned across projects. By setting clear expectations and partnering with experienced suppliers, Thames Water aims to support the industry’s increased investment while staying focused on its long-term goals.
