Cemex and VeryNile Tackle Nile River Pollution
Cemex is working with environmental initiative VeryNile to reduce pollution in the River Nile while creating jobs and promoting sustainability in Egypt. The partnership, launched in 2022, has already removed over 575 tonnes of waste from the river.
Of the waste collected, Cemex has repurposed more than 460 tonnes as alternative fuel at its Assiut Cement Plant, supporting its circular economy strategy. Employees have also participated in clean-up activities to help remove pollution from the water.
The collaboration has allowed VeryNile to expand its operations, including launching a new hub in Assiut, where Cemex is based. This has led to the creation of more than 360 jobs, particularly for local fishing communities, and increased waste collection capacity.
Beyond environmental efforts, Cemex is investing in community projects. In 2023, the company’s Assiut Cement Football Club opened a new academy branch on Qursaya Island in Cairo. The facility provides young people with access to professional coaching, modern sports facilities, and structured training programmes.
Cemex’s work with VeryNile has earned it a place on Fortune’s 2024 Change the World list, ranking 24th among 52 companies recognised for positive social impact.
Yago Castro Izaguirre, president of Cemex Egypt and UAE, said: “Supporting initiatives that leave a lasting positive impact on the environment and our communities is central to Cemex’s mission. With VeryNile, we are tackling pollution while creating opportunities for people of all ages to grow and succeed.”
