HSE renews guidance on working at height risks

HSE urges action to prevent falls from height

Falls from height led to 50 workplace fatalities in the UK during 2023–2024, maintaining their position as the most common workplace hazard. In response, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released detailed guidance to help organisations manage these risks effectively.

“Considering the risks associated with work at height and putting sensible measures in place is crucial for safety,” an HSE spokesperson stated.

The HSE’s step-by-step guide provides practical advice, from avoiding working at height where possible to minimising the risk of falls. Measures include using extendable tools, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), and safety nets, depending on the situation.

Focus on scaffolding safety

The HSE highlights the importance of safe scaffolding practices to prevent accidents. Employers must ensure scaffolds are designed, erected, and inspected by trained and competent personnel. Key points in the HSE guidance include:

Installing guard rails, toe boards, and other barriers to prevent falls.

Ensuring scaffolds are stable, securely tied, and capable of supporting intended loads.

Conducting regular inspections—after installation, every seven days, and following adverse events like strong winds.

“It’s essential that scaffolds are inspected and maintained regularly to ensure they remain safe throughout their use,” the HSE added.

The HSE also stresses the importance of training for scaffolders. Trainees must work under the supervision of competent professionals until they are fully qualified, and employers should provide regular safety updates through toolbox talks.

The HSE continues to prioritise safety in working at height. For more information, including scaffolding requirements and risk management tools, visit the HSE website.
