CTBUH announces 2024 Award of Excellence winners

The Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners' designed Leadenhall Building, London is nominated in the 10 Year Award category of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's 2024 Award of Excellence.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has revealed the winners of its 2024 Award of Excellence, celebrating over 100 outstanding projects in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) and related fields.

Recognised projects span more than 20 categories, including Best Tall Building, Innovation, Urban Habitat, Repositioning, and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.

The UK is well represented in the awards with 8 Bishopsgate, London nominated in the Best Tall Building, by Height (200-299 meters) and Best Tall Building, by Region (Europe) categories, while London's Greenford Quay and Battersea Power Station, Phase Two were nominated in the Urban Habitat Award category. London's 55 Bishopsgate was nominated in the Future Project Award category, while The Leadenhall Building was nominated in the 10 Year Award category, while Battersea Power Station, Phase Two was also nominated alongside College Road, Croydon in the Construction Award category.

“This year’s submissions highlight a broad array of architectural innovations, construction techniques, and urban visions that are transforming tall-building design worldwide,” said CTBUH CEO Javier Quintana de Uña.

“These projects exemplify not only architectural excellence but also the importance of sustainability, resilience, and human-centric design, setting new benchmarks for the AEC industry.”

The CTBUH issued an international call for submissions in December and received entries from architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and other professionals involved in sustainable vertical urbanism globally.

In February, expert juries began reviewing submissions, which included extensive project data, technical drawings, written descriptions, and detailed photography. Jurors were selected for their industry standing and geographical and demographic diversity.

“Having been in the field for many years, I was astounded and encouraged by the innovative ideas in the evaluated projects,” said Julia Köhler, senior structural consultant at CREE and a juror for the Innovation category. “They demonstrate the vast potential and drive for reimagination within the AEC industry.”

Marion Charlier, advanced building solutions & sustainability lead at ArcelorMittal and a jury member for the Construction category, said the competition could be viewed as a catalyst for a significant shift in design and construction practices towards a sustainable built environment.

“I discovered numerous projects capable of significantly reducing environmental impact—projects that can be replicated in various contexts. I look forward to exploring these initiatives further at CTBUH’s upcoming international conference, ‘New or Renew,’ which addresses a critical industry dilemma: prioritising new constructions or adapting existing structures for environmental, economic, and social sustainability,” they explained.

Award of Excellence winners will now progress to the next stage of judging. Project teams will present their submissions to attendees and live juries at the CTBUH 2024 International Conference, taking place from September 23–27 in London and Paris. Overall winners for each category will be announced at the awards ceremony and dinner.

Now in its 21st year, the 2024 awards introduce the Global Community Award, allowing non-jurors to actively participate in recognising outstanding projects. This inclusive award embraces diverse perspectives and fosters a sense of camaraderie within the international AEC community. Submissions for the Global Community Award will be accepted online until September 16, allowing ample time for participants to review and vote for their favourite projects.
