FPS celebrate 60 years of excellence in piling
The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2024.
Founded in 1964 by 13 pioneering piling contractors, the FPS has consistently aimed to improve the piling industry's standards, safety, working conditions, and commercial practices.
Over the past six decades, the Federation has achieved significant milestones, thanks to influential leaders and a steadfast commitment to advancing the geotechnical sector.
Since its founding, the FPS has had 44 chairs from 27 different UK companies, each contributing to its mission. These leaders have fostered strong relationships and partnerships that drive innovation and excellence in piling.
The FPS has led the industry in enhancing safety protocols through guidance, position papers, and standards. It has provided hands-on training through apprenticeships, conferences, webinars, and more. Its committees ensure collaborative problem-solving by bringing together expertise from across the industry.

1970: Launch of Piling Supervisors Training

1980: First CFA Piles Conference in the UK

1989: Release of the first Piling Safety Video
1993: Launch of NVQ Level 2: Piling Operations
1995: Introduction of the Piling CSCS Card
2001: Launch of the FPS Audit Scheme
2002: Introduction of the Working Platform Certificate
2003: Launch of the Retention Resisting Policy
2010: Publication of Piling Adjacent to Live Railways
2012: FPS Training recognised by the Major Contractor Group
2013: Launch of the EFFC Carbon Calculator
2015: Launch of FPS Associate Membership
2016: Launch of the FPS Awards

These milestones reflect FPS's dedication and impact on the industry, including authoring the original British Standards for Piling, creating the Apprenticeship for Piling, and introducing numerous initiatives and policies that set industry benchmarks.
